With a handheld 16mm camera, amateur and professional actors, as well as plenty of documentary footage of everyday life in post-revolutionary Cuba, Sara Gómez created a dynamic and complex milestone in the history of Cuban and feminist film. Different narrative voices and perspectives and particularly the elliptical interweaving of feature film scenes and documentary sequences infuse the fictional love story between the teacher Yolanda and the factory worker Mario. Pars pro toto, the unequal relationship becomes a mirror of a society in the process of social and economic transformation. (mg)
